Studio Apartment Concept Design - For a client conceived as a concert pianist client in TriBeCa neighborhood of Manhattan.
This project includes the design drawings, inspiration boards, and furniture photos for my final studio apartment project. The client is a 38 year-old concert pianist and teacher at Julliard. Her style can be best described as Bohemian Chic, and she is a maximalist, loving color and design. She is well-traveled, both from performances and personal travels, and she loves to collect small mementos of her experiences. She enjoys dressing up and wants a large closet space. It is very important to my client to have her signature aqua-colored baby grand piano in her home. She loves bright colors and soft shapes, and a blend of vintage with more contemporary styles. I have centered her piano in the space, near the window, with a striking chandelier by Aqua Creations hanging above.
She enjoys having a few (generally under 6) friends over for small get-togethers, during which she will play piano and visit with her guests. Storage is important, as is a cozy separated sleeping area. The bed features a huge padded, curved headboard, and is separated from the living area by an 8' tall curved divider with a dresser on the bed side and a thin bookshelf on the living room side (in a slightly darker gray than the walls). Curved covers with light gray marble tops house the HVAC units. The living room features a built-in bookshelf (including a Frame TV in the center) running down the East side of the apartment with a gate-leg style table for dining and occasional work. It includes a large curved sectional (a la Roche Bobois' Mah Jong sofa merged with Vladimir Kagan's Big Picture sofa) to create a flex-space for entertaining guests while playing piano or - switching the sectional pieces around and pushing some together - lounging to watch television or read a book. As the furniture is brightly colored, the walls, built-ins, and kitchen cabinets are cashmere grey in color, with the headboard and dresser in a slightly darker tone of the wall color. The tone of the apartment is upscale yet playful, matching my client's personality and needs.
